The Beauty of Plants

While natural beauty remedies are nothing new, the latest advances in skincare are looking towards a new batch of high tech botanicals and plant-based derivatives to tackle some of our biggest skin ageing concerns and offer up a multitude of complexion-boosting benefits.

Closer to home, Dubai-made skincare brand Shirley Conlon Organics uses certified organic food grade ingredients from nature, to whip up skincare remedies specially formulated for hot climates.

Upon moving to the UAE, Shirley experienced a number of skin issues due to the humid climate change. “I began to develop frequent breakouts from heavy ingredients blocking my pores, along with pigmentation from photo-toxic additives. So my journey began to create clean, effective products with sun-safe ingredients that were easily absorbed and complementary to hotter climates.” Drawing on her background as an aesthetician and working for a large cosmetic house in Italy, Shirley studied organic cosmetic science in the UK and Australia before developing her namesake beauty brand. For Shirley, natural beauty comes down to the ingredients.

Organic and natural, sustainable ingredients offer far superior, long-lasting results and benefits compared to their synthetic counterparts,” she revealed to Emirates Woman. “Apart from supporting sustainable agriculture and preserving our eco-system, there are numerous health benefits, too – less toxicity in the body and improved long-term condition of the skin.

Her products are crafted in small batches, using high-quality botanical ingredients suited to the UAE temperatures. “Rose hip oil is always prized as the ultimate cold pressed botanical for skincare,” Shirley explains. “I also love argan, prickly pear, pumpkin seed and black seed oil. Sea buckthorn and carrot  are very also important for hotter climates – we choose all our botanicals to benefit skin exposed to heat and humidity so we never use sun-sensitive ingredients.

A much-anticipated new vitamin C serum is also in the pipeline. “People don’t realise that most vitamin C serums on the market are highly photo-toxic and not stable – the vitamin C actually disintegrates in heat and sunlight. We have been researching this product for the past year and half, and hope to launch soon,” Shirley revealed.

With the beauty industry making its move towards more plantbased formulas in an effort to cut back on toxins and parabenfilled products of the past, you can look forward to an all-round cleaner skincare routine which in turn will see your complexion reap the benefits.
