Facial wipes – Why are they so bad for the skin and the environment?

Facial wipes

In recent years, facial wipes have stormed the skincare industry. They are extremely convenient and easy to use, especially when you are having one of those long exhausting days where a 3 step cleansing ritual isn’t a priority and simply sounds impossible. There is a saying that nothing good ever comes easily and although using facial wipes can be easy and less time consuming we need to highlight that they are not good for your skin and definitely not good to our environment.

Cleansing facial wipes usually contain large amounts of chemical components aimed at keeping them moist, effective and preserved. PEGS, Propylene Glycol, Parabens, Synthetics Fragrances are some of the chemicals you’ll find in cleansing wipes. Most of these ingredients are very controversial and have been linked to toxicity in the body especially if used on broken skin.

Why are they bad for your skin?
There aren’t many facial wipes that contain the correct elements to effectively and gently remove impurities and make up from your skin! And because of this you continuously rub your face trying to remove your makeup, especially mascara, leading to pull and drag the skin – which is never a good idea for any skin!

Even if you find a wipe that does remove your make-up residue, you are very likely to be stripping the skin of its natural oil balance, leaving your skin susceptible to dryness, redness and breakouts.

Not to mention the artificial fragrances, preservatives and strong chemicals that can sensitize the skin, leaving it unbalanced, sore and red. If you’ve ever felt your skin looks red and blotchy after using facial wipes, this is due to the harsh compounds and alcohol content.
Wipes may be a convenient short-term hack but like everything that is quick and easy – it has long term hazards!

Why are they bad for the environment?
It’s not only your skin that suffers the harmful consequence of most facial wipes but they are also becoming an increasingly huge problem for our environment. And to make it even worse the wipes are made from non-biodegradable plastic fibers. A recent report has shown that the number of wet facial wipes washed up on British beaches has increased by 50%.

The report also stated that an average of 35 facial wipes were found for every kilometer of the beach, in Britain. These wipes pollute our oceans and seas causing harm to aquatic life and if they end up in a landfill, it takes 100’s of years to decompose due to its plastic composition.
